Types of Research

Standard

Exploratory

    • Questions
      • Did you ever wonder about……?
      • What do people do when…..?
    • Hypothesis
    • Statistics
      • Qualitative – coding
      • Descriptive (Central tendency, spread, variability)
      • Charts

Descriptive

      • Questions
        • How much time do people spend sleeping
        • How many mistakes are made when typing
      • Hypothesis
      • Statistics
        • Inferential statistics
        • Categorical – CHI squared
        • Continuous – ANOVA, correlations, factor analysis
        • Charts – scatter plots, bar graphs
      • Look out for  -mix-ups between categorical and continuous data over generalising

Predictive

    • Questions
      • Can size (predictor variable) be used to predict death (response variable)
      • Does having an iphone lead to bad vision
    • Hypothesis
    • Statistics
      • Correlation
      • Regression
    • Look out for invalid variables (op def), and causation being confused for correlation

Explanatory

    • Questions
      • How does size predict death
      • Why do iphone users have bad vision
    • Hypothesis
    • Statistics
      • Interential statistics
      • T-test, ANOVA
    • There is nothing ‘special’ about EX R – more about ensuring the internal validity of the research

Testing Word Press Plugins

Standard

I’ve been doing some simple wordpress plugin development, but the plugin is starting to get a bit more complex and taking longer and longer to run through the manual tests I was doing.  Time to switch to TDD and build up a suite of tests and get the code into testable shape.

To make it a bit more tricky I’m working on  a chromebook, so want to try and do it all online – for free!

Found some useful blogs for doing TDD with wordpress:

Let’s see what happens

Scenarios

Standard

“A scenario is a concise description of a persona using a product to achieve a goal” (Cooper).

concise : short but complete; breadth instead of depth

product : assume the product (software or physical device) exists, even if it doesn’t

goal : the reason why we perform a task

Used to validate design, check assumptions.

Create a shared understanding of end users.

Prototyping
